  • April 16th: Resources for the Modern Birder

This class will cover how to use apps like Merlin and E-bird in conjunction with more traditional ID methods, how to use and choose binoculars, and more.

  • April 17th: Bird Habitats of Puget Sound

Explore the many unique habitats of the Puget Sound and what kind of birds call them home.

  • April 18th: Identifying Birds: Beaks, Build, Behavior

Ed shares strategies for quick bird identification and showcases some of the birds you're most likely to see in the Tacoma area.

  • April 19th: Titlow Beach Fieldtrip

Practice the skills you've learned at Titlow beach, which features shoreline, saltmarsh, and riparian forest habitats. Whether you attend just one class or all three, you're welcome to attend the fieldtrip.

What You'll Need for the Class

For the classroom sessions, you'll only need to bring a pen and paper and an interest in learning about birding!

For the fieldtrip, bring snacks, a water bottle, and dress appropriately for the weather. Bring rain gear as weather in April can be unpredictable, and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking over variable terrain--although most trails at Titlow Beach are flat, some areas can be wet or rocky. Let the instructor know if you need to borrow a pair of binoculars to use during the fieldtrip and they will be provided at no extra charge. This class is suitable for ages 14 and up, but all minors must be accompanied by an adult.

About the Instructor

Ed Beck is a Tahoma Bird Alliance member and volunteer. This will be his third time teaching this popular birding class! A lifelong casual birder, he began to bird more seriously during the winter of 2019 when a harsh winter drove mountain species down to lower elevations. Captivated by their adaptations and variety, he began studying local birds and attending birding walks. He teaches these classes to share his love of birding with others!
